New Arts Center to Open in Anacostia
ARCH Development Corporation (ADC) announces the Anacostia Arts Center, coming spring 2013 to Historic Anacostia. Designed
to be a community arts nucleus, the Anacostia Arts Center will bring
approximately 10,000 square feet of creative commercial space to Good
Hope Road SE. Conveniently located at the south end of the 11th Street
Bridge between Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE and 13th Street SE, the
Anacostia Arts Center will bring independent creative projects together
under one roof.
Anacostia
Arts Center will occupy the street level of 1231 Good Hope Road SE,
formally the ARCH Training Center. The property is divided up into
spaces connected by a main hall, with common lounge areas in the front
and rear of the building.
Currently
under construction, the space will include: a built-out black box
theater, the American Poetry Museum Reading Room, the short-term
creative rental facility Blank Space SE, a coffee shop & juice bar,
three gallery rental spaces, and two boutique/wellness center rental
spaces. Now accepting proposals and lease applications: the black box
theater, all gallery and boutique/wellness center spaces, coffee shop
& juice bar.
Duane Gautier, CEO of ADC, explains his vision for the center: "This project will assist in transforming the Anacostia neighborhood into a place people recognize as an arts destination."
Anacostia
Arts Center represents the newest effort by ADC to revitalize Historic
Anacostia by providing opportunities for the creative economy to
flourish in the area. The organization's work in the neighborhood began
with job training, housing, and micro-lending programs more than 20years
ago. The focus expanded to the arts in 2007, with ADC's opening of its
first art gallery in the area, Honfleur Gallery. In 2009, Vivid
Solutions DC Archival Print Lab opened, followed by the accompanying
fine art photography and digital art exhibition space, The Gallery at
Vivid Solutions. ADC produced its first large-scale community arts
festival LUMEN8Anacostia in April 2012 and its return is scheduled for
June 22, 2013. In summer 2012 Honfleur Gallery established the Annual
East of the River Distinguished Artist Award. The Anacostia Playhouse,
formally the H St. Playhouse, relocated to Shannon Place SE with
assistance from ADC. It is also slated to open in spring 2013.
Calling
it a "natural addition to an already flourishing art culture" in
Anacostia and predicting that it will be a destination for residents and
nonresidents," ANC Commissioner 8A06 Kendall Graham said, "The establishment of the Anacostia Arts Center, along with
the opening of the Anacostia Playhouse and second annual
LUMEN8Anacostia festival, will only add to the momentum of Anacostia's
renaissance."
ADC's
Director of Business Development Nikki Peele pointed out that the
location of the Anacostia Arts Center directly above The HIVE 2.0 will
be mutually beneficial to both projects. She said, "The HIVE 2.0 is
about providing an environment for innovators, visionaries, and
entrepreneurs to collaborate and thrive. Having the Anacostia Arts
Center in the same building as The HIVE 2.0 is a huge asset in making
our space more attractive, more dynamic, and more cutting edge for the
entrepreneurs that call our small business incubators home."
With
the Anacostia Arts Center, ADC intends to further diversify the arts
landscape in Historic Anacostia by providing the space and start-up
support for other arts organizations to lay down roots in the community.

Bareket Observatory in Israel is offering a free live webcast of the close approach on February 15 beginning at 20:15 UTC (2:15 p.m. Central Time in the U.S.), for a duration of about 3 hours. For more information, visit Baraket Observatory’s website. You’ll be automatically transfered to the live images, during the event.
Clay Center Observatory will offer real-time high-definition video, weather permitting, beginning at 1:00 UTC on February 16 (5 p.m. CST on February 15). Clay Center Observatory’s Ustream channel is here.
NASA Television will provide commentary starting at 19:00 UTC (1 p.m. CST) on February 15. The commentary will be streamed live online at http://www.nasa.gov/ntv and http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl2.
Slooh Space Camera will cover the asteroid’s near-approach on Friday, February 15, with several live shows, free to the public, starting at 02:00 UTC on February 16 (8 p.m. CST). The Bethesda Arts& Entertainment District is currently accepting applications for the seventh annual Bethesda Painting Awards. Up to nine finalists will be selected to display their work in an exhibition during the month of June at Gallery B in downtown Bethesda, and the top four winners will receive $14,000 in prize monies. Best in Show will be awarded $10,000; Second Place will be honored with $2,000 and Third Place will receive $1,000. Additionally, a “Young Artist” whose birthday is after February 22, 1983 may be awarded $1,000.
Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. All original 2-D paintings including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, encaustic and mixed media will be accepted. The maximum dimensions should not exceed 60 inches in width or 84 inches in height. No reproductions. Artwork must have been completed within the last two years and must be available for the duration of the exhibit.
Each artist must submit 5 slides, application and a non-refundable fee of $25. Digital entries will be accepted in JPG, GIF or PNG format. For a complete application, please visit www.bethesda.org, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

As 2012 DA14 comes by tomorrow...

Here is another way to picture Earth and close-passing asteroids, from Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland. The image below is near-Earth space today – February 13, 2013. It shows all the objects currently within 0.3 AU of Earth – that’s 45 million kilometers – or about 30 million miles – or about one-third of the distance between us and the sun. The red oval around Earth represents 3.84 million kilometers, or 10 lunar distances.

MAP’S DO-IT-YOURSELF BENEFIT EXHIBITION, SILENT AUCTION AND PARTY!

Maryland Art Place is thrilled to announce the return of Out of Order, the much-anticipated Do-It-Yourself spring benefit exhibition, silent auction and party!
One of Baltimore’s most
celebrated annual events, Out of Order is a one-night-only opportunity
for collectors to acquire contemporary art at outrageously low silent
auction prices. Both emerging and established artists present their
original work in a first-come-first-served salon style exhibition,
covering the walls of MAP’s Power Plant Live! gallery space. Artists and
art lovers mix and mingle while enjoying music, wine, beer, signature
cocktail and lite fare. Last year, nearly 300 artists took part in the
silent auction exhibition and hundreds of guests gathered for the event!
Proceeds from art sales are split mutually between MAP and the artist.
Revenue generated at Out of Order directly supports MAP’s programming
throughout the year.
MAP is also excited to partner again this year with the Art Connection in the Capital Region,
offering artists the opportunity to donate their unsold work to a
valuable organization that places donated works in the facilities of

IMPRINT:
For the second year, MAP will launch an amazing opportunity for one,
select artist to be part of the IMPRINT artwork replication program.
Launched through Out of Order this program offers prominent promotion of

website. Submissions will be accepted through March 1 with the selected work featured for sale at the April 5th event.

Join
Washington Project for the Arts and The Capital Area Gay and Lesbian
Chamber of Commerce, at WPA's new home in the Capitol Skyline Hotel, for
a workshop on taxes and financial planning specifically geared towards
artists and their unique challenges. Presenters from the Chamber will
instruct attendees on the step-by-step basics of how to organize one's
finances as an artist, from when to consider setting up a business
account to how to keep track of your cash flow. Attendees will also
learn how to tackle their taxes, focusing on the specific issues artists
face such as multiple income sources and types, tax forms, and what
deductions an artist may claim.
Denise R. Bump, CRPC, CMFC
Denise
has been a financial advisor with Ameriprise (formerly American
Express) for over thirteen years, with twelve years as a franchise
owner. During that time Denise grew her practice from her role as sole
practitioner to its current ensemble of three advisors, one para planner
and one client service coordinator. Her practice, Bump &
Associates, specializes in providing comprehensive advice to
individuals, couples and small business owners on topics ranging from
retirement planning to insurances, domestic partner planning to estate
planning and tax planning. Prior to her work with Ameriprise, Denise ran
a feminist bookstore in Dupont Circle for over 15 years, an experience
she credits with giving her a unique perspective and understanding on
the financial dynamics of a small business. These small business
challenges translate easily to the challenges facing artists as they
both have the need to manage cash flow, minimize taxes, and save for the
short and long term while trying to create and sell product.
Brian Haney, CLTC, CFS
Brian
has been in the Financial Services Business for 10 years, having spent
the beginning of his career in Banking and Securities. As a native of
the Washington area, Brian grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, attending
high school in Bethesda, Maryland. After graduating in 3 years from
Indiana University, he began his career in Banking & Securities. Mr.
Haney moved to his current firm, MassMutual of Greater Washington, over
5 years ago to work exclusively as a Broker serving a diverse range of
clients in the market.
This workshop is presented in collaboration with The Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

Aqua Art Miami has a new boss
Art Miami LLC, parent company of Florida's longest running premier
contemporary and modern art fair Art Miami and producer of five of
America's most respected international art fairs, announced today that
it has appointed Jennifer Jacobs as Director of Aqua Art Miami. Art
Miami LLC acquired the fair at the conclusion of the 2012 edition.

am happy to announce that Jennifer Jacobs has joined us as the new Fair
Director of Aqua Art Miami. Based in the Northwest, where the spirit of
Aqua originated, Jennifer has extensive background in the visual arts
and fair management, and has been closely aligned with Aqua since its
inception as an exhibitor, visitor and supporter. I am confident she
will champion the fair's artistic mission to furthering emerging and
cutting edge galleries and be a leading force in driving our success as
we begin Aqua Art Miami's new chapter," said Nick Korniloff, Art Miami

Director of Development for the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art
(PICA). Based out of Portland, OR, Jacobs will also assist in exhibitor
recruitment efforts for the 2013 editions of CONTEXT Art Miami, Art
Southampton, and the 2014 edition of Art Wynwood.

The cast is relatively small for TMP's usual productions with only nine actors and an accompanist. Many of the actors portray two or three characters throughout the five musicals. While all the actors handled their roles skillfully, as usual, some were more enjoyable to watch than others and maybe it is just a matter of preference of acting styles. Regardless of what acting style you prefer, Elise Campello, Cherity Harchis were standouts among the cast.Read the whole review here.

The Kinsey Institute is accepting submissions for The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show 2013 at Indiana University’s Grunwald Gallery of Art.
The competition is open to all artists 18 years and older creating artworks relating to human sexual behavior, gender and/or reproduction. The jurors are interested in both the positive and negative ways these topics affect individuals, couples and/or society, and welcome a broad range of submissions exploring subjects including: sex, gender, sexuality, eroticism, reproduction, romantic relationships, the politics of sex and gender, human figure, and sexual health.
