Bethesda Painting Awards

Deadline: Friday, February 22, 2013. 

The Bethesda Arts& Entertainment District is currently accepting applications for the seventh annual Bethesda Painting Awards. Up to nine finalists will be selected to display their work in an exhibition during the month of June at Gallery B in downtown Bethesda, and the top four winners will receive $14,000 in prize monies. Best in Show will be awarded $10,000; Second Place will be honored with $2,000 and Third Place will receive $1,000. Additionally, a “Young Artist” whose birthday is after February 22, 1983 may be awarded $1,000. 

Artists must be 18 years of age or older and residents of Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. All original 2-D paintings including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, encaustic and mixed media will be accepted. The maximum dimensions should not exceed 60 inches in width or 84 inches in height. No reproductions. Artwork must have been completed within the last two years and must be available for the duration of the exhibit. 

Each artist must submit 5 slides, application and a non-refundable fee of $25. Digital entries will be accepted in JPG, GIF or PNG format. For a complete application, please visit www.bethesda.org, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to:

As 2012 DA14 comes by tomorrow...

When you see computer-generated images of asteroid 2012 DA14′s February 15, 2013 close flyby – showing the asteroid near Earth in space, seen from a distant vantage point – you might see the Earth, the asteroid, perhaps the sun, and maybe a few other planets.

Here is another way to picture Earth and close-passing asteroids, from Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland. The image below is near-Earth space today – February 13, 2013. It shows all the objects currently within 0.3 AU of Earth – that’s 45 million kilometers – or about 30 million miles – or about one-third of the distance between us and the sun. The red oval around Earth represents 3.84 million kilometers, or 10 lunar distances.

MAP’S DO-IT-YOURSELF BENEFIT EXHIBITION, SILENT AUCTION AND PARTY!

Maryland Art Place is thrilled to announce the return of Out of Order, the much-anticipated Do-It-Yourself spring benefit exhibition, silent auction and party!

One of Baltimore’s most celebrated annual events, Out of Order is a one-night-only opportunity for collectors to acquire contemporary art at outrageously low silent auction prices. Both emerging and established artists present their original work in a first-come-first-served salon style exhibition, covering the walls of MAP’s Power Plant Live! gallery space. Artists and art lovers mix and mingle while enjoying music, wine, beer, signature cocktail and lite fare. Last year, nearly 300 artists took part in the silent auction exhibition and hundreds of guests gathered for the event! Proceeds from art sales are split mutually between MAP and the artist. Revenue generated at Out of Order directly supports MAP’s programming throughout the year.

MAP is also excited to partner again this year with the Art Connection in the Capital Region, offering artists the opportunity to donate their unsold work to a valuable organization that places donated works in the facilities of not-for-profit social service organizations: http://www.artconnection-cr.org/

IMPRINT: For the second year, MAP will launch an amazing opportunity for one, select artist to be part of the IMPRINT artwork replication program. Launched through Out of Order this program offers prominent promotion of a singularly, selected artwork. Editioned replications will be sold throughout 2013 and the selected artist will be highlighted on the MAP website. Submissions will be accepted through March 1 with the selected work featured for sale at the April 5th event.

How Artists Can Participate

Workshop on taxes and financial planning

Join Washington Project for the Arts and The Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, at WPA's new home in the Capitol Skyline Hotel, for a workshop on taxes and financial planning specifically geared towards artists and their unique challenges. Presenters from the Chamber will instruct attendees on the step-by-step basics of how to organize one's finances as an artist, from when to consider setting up a business account to how to keep track of your cash flow. Attendees will also learn how to tackle their taxes, focusing on the specific issues artists face such as multiple income sources and types, tax forms, and what deductions an artist may claim.

Denise R. Bump, CRPC, CMFC
Denise has been a financial advisor with Ameriprise (formerly American Express) for over thirteen years, with twelve years as a franchise owner. During that time Denise grew her practice from her role as sole practitioner to its current ensemble of three advisors, one para planner and one client service coordinator. Her practice, Bump & Associates, specializes in providing comprehensive advice to individuals, couples and small business owners on topics ranging from retirement planning to insurances, domestic partner planning to estate planning and tax planning. Prior to her work with Ameriprise, Denise ran a feminist bookstore in Dupont Circle for over 15 years, an experience she credits with giving her a unique perspective and understanding on the financial dynamics of a small business. These small business challenges translate easily to the challenges facing artists as they both have the need to manage cash flow, minimize taxes, and save for the short and long term while trying to create and sell product.

Brian Haney, CLTC, CFS 
Brian has been in the Financial Services Business for 10 years, having spent the beginning of his career in Banking and Securities. As a native of the Washington area, Brian grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, attending high school in Bethesda, Maryland. After graduating in 3 years from Indiana University, he began his career in Banking & Securities. Mr. Haney moved to his current firm, MassMutual of Greater Washington, over 5 years ago to work exclusively as a Broker serving a diverse range of clients in the market. 
 
This workshop is presented in collaboration with The Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

Opportunity for artists doing Hair

Deadline:  March 8, 2013 (postmarked).  

Exhibition on display 9/3/13 – 12/24/13. This exhibition will be accompanied by an exhibition catalog. 

Hair grows everywhere on the human body except the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, eyelids, and lips.  This exhibition will explore ideas about hair in many ways, including cultural, anthropological, historical and physical. 

A proposal should consist of: 
1. Statement – what is the rationale behind the exhibition? 
2. Resume(s) of all people involved (including name, address, email, telephone number). 
3. A CD with images (JPEG format, any size). 
4. A list of works with title, date, medium, dimensions.

Aqua Art Miami has a new boss

Art Miami LLC, parent company of Florida's longest running premier contemporary and modern art fair Art Miami and producer of five of America's most respected international art fairs, announced today that it has appointed Jennifer Jacobs as Director of Aqua Art Miami. Art Miami LLC acquired the fair at the conclusion of the 2012 edition.

"I am happy to announce that Jennifer Jacobs has joined us as the new Fair Director of Aqua Art Miami. Based in the Northwest, where the spirit of Aqua originated, Jennifer has extensive background in the visual arts and fair management, and has been closely aligned with Aqua since its inception as an exhibitor, visitor and supporter. I am confident she will champion the fair's artistic mission to furthering emerging and cutting edge galleries and be a leading force in driving our success as we begin Aqua Art Miami's new chapter," said Nick Korniloff, Art Miami LLC, Fair Director and Partner.

Prior to that, Jacobs served as the Director of Development for the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA). Based out of Portland, OR, Jacobs will also assist in exhibitor recruitment efforts for the 2013 editions of CONTEXT Art Miami, Art Southampton, and the 2014 edition of Art Wynwood.

Campello gets a mention!

Not me, but my daughter Elise:
The cast is relatively small for TMP's usual productions with only nine actors and an accompanist. Many of the actors portray two or three characters throughout the five musicals. While all the actors handled their roles skillfully, as usual, some were more enjoyable to watch than others and maybe it is just a matter of preference of acting styles. Regardless of what acting style you prefer, Elise Campello, Cherity Harchis were standouts among the cast.

The Kinsey Institute is accepting submissions for The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show 2013 at Indiana University’s Grunwald Gallery of Art.  

The competition is open to all artists 18 years and older creating artworks relating to human sexual behavior, gender and/or reproduction.  The jurors are interested in both the positive and negative ways these topics affect individuals, couples and/or society, and welcome a broad range of submissions exploring subjects including: sex, gender, sexuality, eroticism, reproduction, romantic relationships, the politics of sex and gender, human figure, and sexual health.

WPA is bringing SELECT, their annual art auction exhibition and gala to 64 New York Avenue, NE in NoMa this year! The main event, which takes place Saturday, March 16, 2013, showcases works by more than 100 prominent and emerging artists in a month-long exhibition and brings together over 500 patrons and artists for a vibrant gala evening and auction. The exhibition opens on Saturday, February 16 from 6-8 p.m. with a reception sponsored by Peacock Café. The opening reception and exhibition is free and open to the public. 

The exhibition will remain on view from 12 p.m.- 6 p.m. every Wednesday through Saturday from February 20 through March 15.
