Belmar & Binstock

The beautiful spaces at H&F Fine Arts next present concurrent solo shows of works by Alan Binstock and Joan Belmar. Both artists’ work explores the circle of life and construct dialogue assessing the parallels of three dimensional abstract structures and human life.

Belmar’s own rich work will serve as a layered backdrop to the translucent sculptures created by Binstock, whose work explores the forms that express or reflect the sacred, the inner life and varied manifestations of the micro and macro worlds.

Opening reception: Saturday, December 6 from 5-8pm.

Peace Now!

Peace Now! opens with a reception on Friday, Feb 22 from 6-9 pm at the Warehouse Gallery in DC. Through April 6, 2008.

In observance of the 5th anniversary of the Iraqi War and as part of the March 19, 2008 "March for Peace" in Washington and other cities around the country, the Warehouse hosts its last peace exhibition. To the left is the room-dissecting Checkpoint Installation by Sondra Arkin in collaboration with Beth Baldwin.

Where is the Peace? Opens on Thursday

Warehouse Gallery hosts Where is the Peace?, an exhibition by mostly DC area artists where the artists examine war and peace in our world through painting, sculpture, photography, installations and video. The exhibition runs from September 8 through October 2, 2005 and the Opening Reception is this coming Thursday, September 8th from 6-8pm.

The Nevin Kelly Gallery, located at 1517 U Street, NW, Washington, DC, will host a solo exhibition of works by Chilean-born, Washington, DC artist Joan Belmar from May 23 until June 17, 2007. The exhibition, titled Color Transparencies presents Belmar's recent work in paint, acetate and Mylar.

The gallery will host an opening reception with the artist on Thursday, May 24, from 6 until 9 o'clock p.m. The public is invited. Show runs May 23 – June 17, 2007. Opening Reception Thursday, May 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

Polish Artists

Stop by and experience "An Ideal Mix-Up," an exhibition of works by Polish and local DC area artists at the Nevin Kelly Gallery in DC next Saturday, January 26, 4 pm for a lecture by gallerist Nevin J. Kelly on the Polish artists featured in the gallery followed by refreshments.

Essentially this show is a group exhibition that includes works by the contemporary Polish artists that helped launch the gallery in May 2003 and the many local artists who have joined the gallery along the way.

The exhibition will feature works by DC area artists Sondra Arkin, Joan Belmar, Ellyn Weiss, Mary Chiaramonte and Laurel Hauler and by Polish artists Edward Dwurnik, Darek Pala, Krzysztof Kokoryn, Pawel Król, Lukasz Huculak and Michal Zaborowski.

The show will be on view in the gallery from now until February 24, 2008.

Stimulus Opens tomorrow night Nevin Kelly

In recognition of the challenging economic times, DC's Nevin Kelly Gallery, located at 1400 Irving Street, NW, #132, will showcase “Stimulus,” a group exhibition of works by more than twenty DC area artists at limited-opportunity prices.

The gallery has selected, a Tuesday evening (June 16), typically a slow night for galleries and other businesses, for the opening reception. Joining in the celebration, several local restaurants and other business will offer their own stimulus packages on opening night.

Show runs June 16 through July 11, 2009; Opening Reception, Tuesday, June 16 from 5:30 - 8:30 pm.

All works will be priced at $500 or less and for works over $100, there will be a limit of 3 works per artist.

Superfine! DC Preview

Superfine! DC opened on Halloween night and will go through the weekend - I plan to visit tomorrow and (as I usually do to any art fair that I visit) I will give you my opinions and selection of the best works that I saw there. Here's a blurb from the fair itself:

I've been visiting the fair's online presence regularly, and as the planet's greatest living art fair critic, here are the works which caught my eye (so far...):

Nate by Marin Swift
9 x 9 inches framed. Oil on Panel

Martin Swift oil portraits at Monochrome Collective are spectacular artistic muscle-flexing portraits that showcase this artist's command of the classical chiaroscuro technique while concurrently revitalizing it to a modern context! Each portrait is not only a likeness of some individual, but also a psychological narrative of that individual!

The DMV's longest running gallery, Zenith Gallery (disclaimer: I am represented by them at the fair) is full of DC area blue chip artists such as Anne Marchand, Elissa Farrow-Savos (who will probably sell out), Emily Piccirillo, Margery Goldberg, and many others, but it is Stephen Hansen who (as usual) steals the show with his humorous works, which are in reality superb works of art disguised as the rare "humor in art" genre.

Potomac's RoFa Projects, a key and hardworking DMV area art dealer who does art fairs all over the planet has elegant works by Fabian Ugalde, Jose Margulis and Raymond Romero which not only work wll together, but also should satisfy the appetite of collectors of minimalist art.

Kensington's Adah Rose Gallery, another hardworking DMV area art dealer which travels to art fairs all over the country is also well-represented in the fair, with many DMV/Baltimore blue chip artists such as Gregory Ferrand, who just keeps on getting impossibly better and better as a painter and storyteller, Joan Belmar, Jessica Drank and others.

A Long Way to Go by Susan LaMont

The locals continue to be well-represented by the District's Susan Calloway Fine Arts, where one of my favorite DMV artists of all time, Susan LaMont displays her hyper-realistic paintings, which after all these years continue to amaze me as much as the first time that I saw them decades ago! Art fair pro and my good bud Matthew Langley also stands out with his elegant abstract works, as he always does...

I also liked the sexy and intelligent photographs by Lori Cuisinier, whose sensual wok stands out simply buy the sheer eroticism of the human figure when coupled with compositional elements and props that makes the viewer ask questions.

Superfine! is one of the few art fairs which allow individual artists' booths, and the DC online version is full of talent such as the interesting works by the District's Noel Kassewitz, which I suspect I'll have to examine in person to see get the full impact of their art, but which online look superb nonetheless.

Her Echo Her Shadow by Scott Hutchison

Another artist whose work I've known and admired for decades is Scott Hutchison. Like LaMont, Hutchison is a master of the realistic brush, but Sott has always veered towards works which stretch the visual senses and modernize some of the ideas of the surrealists of ages ago. Hutchison is one of those artists that in any other city, where local museum curators pay attention to their city artists (as they do not in the DMV), would have been, and should be in the radar of a Hirshhorn Museum curator for a ground-breaking solo.

Susan Jamison and Colleen Garibaldi also caught my eye and will be inspected in person tomorrow!

Let me relate this again: a few months ago Joan Belmar and a group of friends got together and decided to help a small organization called The Family Place.

The mission of Family Place is to work with mothers and children, prevent domestic violence, and provide healthy meals to children and parents. Now he has curated an art exhibition, Art Without Frontiers, put together to raise funds for The Family Place.

“We invite the public to come stimulate their minds and the local economy by supporting this exhibition,” says gallery owner Nevin J. Kelly. “While they are in the Columbia Heights neighborhood, we encourage them to take advantage of the specials being offered by some of our neighboring businesses.”

Kelly explains that “the concept and the name of the show are somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but the show has a serious side. In times like these, arts and artists tend to suffer disproportionately, and we are trying to remind people, by parodying the government's broader stimulus efforts, that local artists and local businesses need their support.”

Participating artists have been asked to price their works for this exhibition at least 15% below their norm. The gallery has agreed to reduce its standard commission to make up part of the difference. All works will be priced at $500 or less. For works over $100, there will be a limit of 3 works per artist. Kelly explains that limiting the number of works by each artist protects the concept of limited opportunity pricing and helps guard against an overall deterioration of the artists' price-points, “an important consideration for collectors,” he says, adding “if you want a work by one of your favorite artists at these prices, you need to buy it before somebody else gets it.”

The gallery is located half-a-block from the Columbia Heights Metro station on the Green Line, and all participating businesses are within a block or two of the Metro station.

Stimulus Closing Reception tomorrow

Head to Nevin Kelly Gallery in DC on Friday, July 10th for the closing reception of "Stimulus," a group exhibition of works by local artists meant to stimulate the mind and the economy. All works in the show are priced at $500 or less, many at limited-opportunity prices. Closing reception from 6-8PM.

Participating artists include John M. Adams, Sondra N. Arkin, Joan Belmar, Tanja Bos, Anne Bouie, Molly Brose, Mary Chiaramonte, Anna U. Art Without Frontiers



A few months ago Joan Belmar and a group of friends got together and decided to help a small organization called The Family Place.

The mission of Family Place is to work with mothers and children, prevent domestic violence, and provide healthy meals to children and parents. Now he has curated an art exhibition, Art Without Frontiers, put together to raise funds for The Family Place.

The opening reception is Oct. 30th from 6:30 - 9:30PM at the beautiful Cultural Institute of Mexico in DC. Details here and RSVP required to lfleitas@thefamilyplace.org.

The Looking Glass: Artist Immigrants of Washington

Let me plug an upcoming group show at American University’s Katzen Art Museum, since I am honored to be part of it. 



By the way, that gorgeous museum was built thanks to a major gift from Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen, he a brilliant collector of art who could teach lessons on how to collect; she a very talented artist with a refined eye for great artwork. The Katzen’s head honcho, Jack Rasmussen, continues to shame all other DMV museum directors and curators when it comes to them tending their own artistic back garden.


At the risk of repeating myself: most DMV museum curators would rather take a cab to Dulles Airport to fly to Berlin in order to visit an emerging artist’s studio than to take a cab to the Gateway Artists’ Studios, or to any area artists’ studios, to look at local artists.


Are you hearing me Stéphane Aquin? Taína Caragol? E. Carmen Ramos? Eleanor Jones Harvey?, etc. Learn to tend your own artistic back garden.




The show is titled The Looking Glass:  Artist Immigrants of Washington and it runs June 18–August 14, 2016. It is part of the amazing Alper Initiative for Washington Artists (if you don’t know what that it, and you are a DMV artist, you should! – contact the Katzen).



The opening is June 18 from 6-8PM. There will be plenty of adult beverages and munchies, and the artists will be there to talk about their work.




The exhibition celebrates ten artists who left Latin America for many different reasons over the last sixty years – primarily for safety, freedom, and opportunity – and made their homes, and their artistic careers and contributions, in the Washington region.

They include Joan Belmar and Juan Downey from Chile, Carolina Mayorga from Colombia, Ric Garcia, Jose Ygnacio Bermudez, and yours truly from Cuba, Muriel Hasbun from El Salvador, Frida Larios from El Salvador/Honduras, Irene Clouthier from Mexico, and Naul Ojeda from Uruguay. They brought with them artistic traditions that took root and bore fruit here in the United States.

DC in NYC

Celebrating its 10th anniversary, PULSE Contemporary Art Fair returns for its New York edition from March 5 – 8, 2015 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea and hard-working DMV gallerist Adah Rose will be at the coming Pulse New York art fair where she will be showcasing Joan Belmar, Brian Dupont, and Alan Steele.
