Zofie Lang opens Saturday at NVCC

The very talented Zofie Lang's first solo exhibition will be taking place at the Margaret W. & Joseph L. Fisher Gallery from April 3 - May 17, 2015. There will be an opening reception and artist talk on April 18th, from 6pm - 8pm (the talk will start around 6:30).
Certain narratives, such as those in fairy tales, have existed for millennia and maintain a grip on our collective imagination. They are refreshed and reiterated, showing up in popular culture in both familiar and novel ways; similar themes also emerge across cultures and generations. Using photography, digital photomontage, and found object assemblage, Zofie Lang’s work reconstructs these narratives visually by extracting their key elements. Zofie examines the underlying meaning of narratives, including the fairy tales she remembers her Polish grandmother telling her as a child and literature that has inspired her. Her assemblages creates new layers of meaning, consisting of a mix of nostalgia and contemplation of our present popular culture.
The gallery is located at NVCC, Alexandria Campus, in the Schlesinger Center, 915 East Campus Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22311 (your GPS will tell you it's at 3001 N Beauregard Street. Don't be alarmed: it is the same place, just a different mailing address). There is a campus parking garage just across the street.

If you need help getting there, please text or call 443-310-3076.

Brooklyn Hit With Anti-Hillary Street Art

The signs appear to be a riff on a group of supporters calling certain words often used to describe Clinton as sexist. Words such as 'secretive,' 'ambitious,' and 'entitled.'
See more pics and read story here  Unless the posters are being put up by Native American Senator Elizabeth Warren's supporters, it is quite rare to see the vast right wing conspiracy employ art to drive political points home. The even vaster left wing nuthouse, on the other hand, is quite good at using art for this purpose.

Attention Dallas: The construction crane that is upended, dangerously resting on your Museum of Art is not a sculpture, it is just a crane that fell. Please stop getting so close to it.

Chris Kraus on the Ambiguous Virtues of Art School

Art and commerce have always been two sides of the same coin and to oppose them would be false. Instead, I want to talk about a shift that has taken place during the past ten years in how art objects reach the market, how they're defined and how we read them.

Kay Kendall is DCCAH's new chair

The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) is pleased to welcome longtime arts and non-profit advocate Kay Kendall as its new chair.

Kendall brings more than four decades of arts, education and community outreach experience and leadership to this vital post. She was a 25-year board member of the Washington Ballet, including eight years as its chair, and is currently on the boards of CityDance and THEARC. As the founder of Kendall+Associates in 2008, she is a consultant on fundraising and non-profit board governance, helping community groups build leadership and organizational structure. Since coming to Washington in 1977, Kendall has also been involved with the Maret School, the Kingsbury Center, Ashoka International and Children's Hospital.

She recently co-chaired the Transition Team on Arts and the Creative Economy for Mayor Muriel Bowser, who said: "Kay Kendall brings an enormous amount of knowledge with her as an arts leader. As a longtime resident of the District of Columbia, she understands the importance of celebrating arts not just in the downtown core but throughout our vibrant neighborhoods."

"I am extremely honored to accept the position of chair of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities," Kendall said. "The arts and humanities make our city great, and the support of the Commission is invaluable in achieving that success. I am proud to be able to do my part to ensure the arts and humanities continue to thrive in the District of Columbia."

Septime Webre, artistic director of the Washington Ballet, praised Kendall's "indefatigable and spirited efforts to secure funds for important artistic initiatives and organizations, and in particular, her championing of access to arts education for young people in the District."

A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Kendall earned a BA in English from Hollins College (now Hollins University) and worked as a teacher, librarian and social worker before coming to Washington.

The Chair and Commissioners of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities are volunteers who are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Council of the District of Columbia. They represent the various wards throughout the city. Kendall was confirmed on March 17, 2015 by the City Council and sworn in by Mayor Bowser on March 20, 2015.

Davis Morton - Losing Virginia
As a retired homicide detective and an artist who is world-traveled, the diversity of Davis Morton's life is reflected in his paintings. When he paints horses, there is always something in each painting of the horse that he owned for 30 years. His landscapes often include fields he rode across or islands where his kayak landed. His city scenes and night-life paintings may be reminiscent of Edward Hopper, but they come from streets that Davis knows. And at the heart of every portrait he paints there is a lifetime of making friends and reading people from every walk of life and many different cultures.

"...Although I still can't find an acceptable label or description for myself, I do have a good idea of what I want my work to be.  I have never tried to paint a "charming frozen moment."  I want (my work) to be like a living moment, with a past, a present and a future that moves on unresolved saying something indistinct.  Rather than trying to paint reality just the way it looks or painting my impression of it, I would like my paintings to say something of its essence.  I would like my work to haunt."

On the curious case of Montgomery College and Greenfest

As I noted late last night and updated this morning, the potential censorship situation at Montgomery College has been avoided because of the college's administration refusal to censor the show (this art program goes back to 1974).

A Bravo Zulu to Montgomery College for taking the difficult, but correct road. However, I remain very concerned about what this says about the organization that requested and then demanded the censorship and the County Executive's Office willingness to give in to that kind of ignorance.

I will be formally requesting that my Councilmember, Roger Berliner, investigate this issue and ensure that there are no future reprisals against Montgomery College.

Update: The Gazette's article on this issue here.

The copy that wasn't

A new Peter Paul Rubens painting has been discovered, and it's a castoff from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Ben van Beneden, director of Antwerp's Rubenshuis, has now declared Portrait of a Young Girl, possibly Clara Serena Rubens to be authentic...

Did Ike Leggett just attempt to censor an art exhibit at MontgomeryCollege?

I am told that allegedly the Chief Executive of Montgomery County has (so far successfully) pressured Montgomery College to censor an art exhibit in the school's Open Gallery. The exhibit is entitled Cindi Hron: Back Pain, and "explores the lingering psychological affects of pain through watercolors and embroidery of abstracted bodies." The Open Gallery is located in the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center, and is run by the department of Visual and Performing Arts.

Parts of the exhibit may/will be censored tomorrow, March 28 during the Montgomery County GreenFest event being held at the college. GreenFest runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the West Campus of Montgomery College's Takoma Park and Silver Spring Campus.

I am also told that on Wednesday evening, March 25, the GreenFest " administration" requested that the exhibit in the Open Gallery be removed for their event. Vice president and Provost Brad Stewart correctly responded on Thursday that the artwork would not be removed because Montgomery College does not condone censorship, and the Open Gallery is a professional exhibit space hosting an external artist (good for him!). As the GreenFest occurs during gallery open hours, Dr. Stewart apparently saw no way to remove the exhibition without damaging the gallery's and the college's reputation.

However, apparently the administration of the GreenFest then contacted Montgomery County Chief Executive Ike Leggett with their complaint. Allegedly Leggett in turn then contacted administrators above Dr. Stewart and allegedly told them to censor the Back Pain exhibit. Faced by this request from the Chief Executive during a budgetary review cycle, the college administration seems to be considering backing down (according to my source) "for fear of budgetary reprisal." Upper level administration then allegedly directed Dr. Stewart to ensure that Cindi Hron: Back pain is censored during tomorrow's GreenFest event. As of this blog post, a final decision by Dr. Stewart has not yet been released. However, short of a gutsy push-back on the college's part, the exhibition may/will be censored

Cindi Hron: Back Pain
This is all the information that I have currently and as such, I am also contacting Vice President and Provost Brad Stewart (brad.stewart@montgomerycollege.edu, 240-567-1312) and also Siobhan Quinn (siobhan.quinn@montgomerycollege.edu, 240-567-5794), whom as the Director of the Cultural Arts Center would have the most information on this topic. For the gallery's perspective, I have contacted Maureen Kohl (maureen.kohl@montgomerycollege.edu, 240-567-1393), Art Center and Gallery Coordinator, and Wilfred Brunner (wilfred.brunner@montgomerycollege.edu, 240-567-1461), Professor and Chair of the Exhibition Committee.

If this is all true, and however it ends, this is not only reprehensible and unacceptable, but once again reveals why the American people are so disillusioned with most of our elected officials. If "Democrat" Leggett, Chief Commissar of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Montgomery County did indeed pressure Montgomery College to censor the exhibition, his alleged art censorship is now on a direction that puts it on a dangerous path to potentially join a notorious set of political art troglodytes that include such monsters as Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro, the fig-leaf painters of a few centuries ago, and many such other "leaders."  And if the GreenFest leadership did initiate the pressure, it also says something about that organization... doesn't it?

If any of the people that I have/will be contacting can add any further info to this issue, I will publish it here.

Update: (Saturday AM): I now have final word on what's happening. Apparently the college administrators stood their ground against censorship, so the Greenfest decided to pull out of the Cafritz Arts Center entirely rather than having exhibitors near the Back Pain exhibit. Greenfest is now being held in the Cultural Arts Center and Jessup Blair Park only, not in the Cafritz Arts Center.
