Welcome to DC to Peter Nesbett: WPA's new CO

As I noted a few days ago, the WPA has a new Commanding Officer - here's their official news release:
Washington Project for the Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Nesbett as our new Executive Director and the opening of Washington Produced Artists on November 14, 2015. This announcement comes on the eve of our 40-year anniversary and our upcoming move to The JBG Companies' Atlantic Plumbing development at 8th and V street NW, in the U Street Corridor and cultural district.
Peter's proven leadership and more than 20 years of experience with contemporary arts will further solidify WPA's place in the local, national, and international artistic community.

Upon taking office on November 2, Peter will enjoy a full immersion into the DC arts community by meeting with more than 100 artists in his first 100 days as Executive Director.

Prior to WPA, Peter was the Associate Director for Programs at The Pew Center for Arts & Culture, a subsidiary of The Pew Charitable Trusts in Philadelphia. He oversaw the capacity-building and professional development programs, while serving as the visual arts specialist. Peter's interest in programming for artists and arts professionals was originally seeded in the 1990s when he led the Seattle Art Museum's Contemporary Art Council and worked in its education department.

"Peter is the complete package. He's well educated, has deep curatorial experience, and he really 'gets' the contemporary and alternative visual arts scenes," says WPA Board of Directors member, Elise Hoffmann. "His compelling vision and commitment to centering WPA within the local arts community is just what we need right now."
Here's a good start for the 100 artists to meet (we'll since this is the DMV, by now around 90, since I am sure that about a dozen or so have already moved!

Peter Nesbett at the WPA

Kim Ward's and Lisa Gold's contributions to the DMV's art scene will never be recorded in a book or TV documentary, but they are huge, and thanks to Al Gore's Internet, they have been recorded over the last decade here is this ass-kicking blog.

Thank you ladies, for steering the WPA through very rough seas. Most DMV area artists have no idea how much they owe you (Personally I owe Kim a fuckload of gratitude, as I met my wife in a show that I curated for the then "WPA/Corcoran")... The Kimster can never do wrong by me!

The WPA has a new leader, who not only has some big shoes to fill (cough, cough... as both Kim and Lisa have tiny feet) but also comes to the WPA as a re-energized artist organization.

Peter Nesbett (in this really good article by my arch nemesis Kristooon Kapppps) appears to be the right point guard for the WPA, and the Lenster welcomes him aboard.... Gotta admit though that I'm not a big fan of Darrow's pic of him (not your fault Darrow... it's the cross-arm staring pose that kills it)... but D-dude, you nailed it with my pic!
Nesbett has only just this month moved to D.C. from Philly, so his first order of business here is meeting the city’s artists—literally. Nesbett is looking to get an audience with 100 artists over his first 100 days on the job. He has a ton of programming ideas, he says, but he doesn’t want to lead with any of them—not until he gauges what at least 100 artists want the WPA to be doing.
Ok Pete... call me... I got a 11 ideas for you as to what the WPA should be doing to kick ass and take names in the nation's capital and other places... empirically-based ideas, not anecdotal or touchy-feely ideas... these are really gooooood ideas Pete! You've got my cell and email...

But above all: Welcome to the DMV!

Lo que no mata... engorda!

The Song of the Mischievous Dog by Dylan Thomas

The Song of the Mischievous Dog by Dylan Thomas... as interpreted by a six-year-old:

Anderson Lennox Campello: I think of someone eating a hot dog, the guy who wrote this poem eating a hot dog.
THERE are many who say that a dog has its day,
And a cat has a number of lives;
There are others who think that a lobster is pink,
And that bees never work in their hives.
There are fewer, of course, who insist that a horse
Has a horn and two humps on its head,
And a fellow who jests that a mare can build nests
Is as rare as a donkey that’s red.
Yet in spite of all this, I have moments of bliss,
For I cherish a passion for bones,
And though doubtful of biscuit, I’m willing to risk it,
And I love to chase rabbits and stones.
But my greatest delight is to take a good bite
At a calf that is plump and delicious;
And if I indulge in a bite at a bulge,
Let’s hope you won’t think me too vicious.

Artists' Websites: Alma Selimovic

A while back I was the Chief Critiquer in David Mordini's and Sean Hennessey's new event "The Critique" at their Otis Street Art Project space and while there had the opportunity to meet and see the work of one of the resident artists: Alma Selimovic.

I was very impressed by the work of this very young European artist and a recent MFA graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philly and the Academy of Fine Arts, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In fact, I was so impressed that we plan to bring her work to SOFA Chicago next month... so buy her now!

How to price artwork

From Saatchi
When pricing your art, it is important to adopt a consistent fact-based price structure. As an artist, you should be prepared to explain how and why you set your price. Prices need to be based on recent sales, the cost of labor and material, and comparisons with similar works. The price of your artwork should also include any packaging costs you might incur if the work sells (you don't need to factor in shipping costs as those will be paid for by the person who buys your work). Compare your art to what sells, not what does not sell. It's a good idea to have artworks in a range of prices in your portfolio, as this will widen the net of people who may be interested in your work.

Artomatic Returns!

Artomatic returns for its signature free art event to be held this year in Hyattsville, Maryland. Artomatic draws over 1000 artists and performers throughout the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area to showcase their talents for a six weeks long free exhibition that routinely attracts more than 75,000 visitors.

This year, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Department of Parks and Recreation welcomes Artomatic to Prince George’s County in a 90,000 square foot space, located at 8100 Corporate Drive in Hyattsville with a Halloween themed opening weekend celebration.
Artomatic is well-known for transforming empty spaces into vibrant arts communities that create unique and exciting events for tens of thousands of visitors - all free to visit. Anyone can show art at Artomatic - it is non-juried and art is selected on a first-come, first serve basis - so it’s a great way to discover new art. In addition to creative art, Artomatic also features a plethora of performing art forms throughout the exhibition – live music, dance, spoken word, comedy as well as professional development series and special events showcases.  Every night of the event, thousands of people visit Artomatic to discover new art, grab a drink, listen to music, go on dates, and mingle with the creative community. No matter what kind of creative events you like, you’ll find something to like at Artomatic.

“We’re excited to be working with the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation who, like Artomatic, understand the importance of art to help foster community,” said George Koch, Founder and Chair Emeritus. “Our diversity of artwork is unmatched because both emerging and established artists present their work side by side, which helps attract the broadest range of visitors.”
“It is our pleasure to host such a renowned art experience in Prince George’s County which complements the numerous arts offerings of the County and the Department of Parks and Recreation,” says Ronnie Gathers, Director of the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation. “Artomatic will also help provide visibility for the thriving artists and art districts in the community, like the Hyattsville Arts District.”

Visitors will enjoy easy access to Artomatic with the New Carrolton METRO Station, as well as plenty of parking and bus stops nearby.

£75,000 for emerging artists born or working the UK and/or Ukraine

£75,000 British quids is a lot of dough, and there's that much Samolians for emerging artists from the UK and Ukraine.
Firtash Foundation and the Saatchi Gallery announce the launch of UK/raine the first
open competition worth GB£75,000 for emerging artists from the UK and Ukraine

UK/raine continues the collaboration between the Firtash Foundation and Saatchi Gallery as part of the Days of Ukraine in the UK and follows on from the huge success of Premonition: Ukrainian Art Now, which ran at the Saatchi Gallery from 9th October – 3rd November 2014.

Premonition was the largest survey to date of contemporary Ukrainian art in the UK and showcased over 80 works by 38 artists. The show attracted 137,438 visitors (5,494 per day), making it the only UK exhibition in the world’s top 20 most attended shows in 2014, and the seventh most popular contemporary art exhibition worldwide according to The Art Newspaper’s annual survey of international museum attendance. Premonition also formed part of the annual Days of Ukraine in the UK festival and the Firtash Foundation’s ongoing support and promotion of Ukrainian arts and culture.

UK/raine launches the first ever open competition for all emerging artists from the UK and Ukraine who are aged 18-35 years old. The aim of the competition is to find and support the most imaginative and talented young artists, including students on BA and MA courses who are living and working in the UK or Ukraine or born in either country.

Artists will be able to enter their work via the Saatchi Gallery’s website into one of five categories: installation, new media (including video and photography), painting, sculpture and street art.

A shortlist of 30 artists (six from each category) will be given the opportunity to exhibit their work over one entire floor at the Saatchi Gallery for a month-long exhibition running from 24th November 2015 – 3rd January 2016. There will also be a winner of a separate public vote. All winners will be announced at the exhibition’s launch and VIP private view in London on 23rd November 2015.

Each of the category winners will receive GB£10,000 with the overall winner of the prize receiving a further GB£20,000. The winner of the public vote will receive GB£5,000 of production costs towards their work, project or exhibition in order to support their future artistic endeavours.

Tonight is a big night at WSS!‏

One of my best pieces of advice, from the billions of great pieces of advice that I dispense on a constant and routine basis, is as follows:

Someone: "Master Lenster, I'd like to start collecting original artwork but have limited funds and do not know whom or what to collect..."

Me: "Why don't you start by visiting lots of art shows and seeing what your visual eye likes? Do not forget to visit lots of student art shows as well."

Someone: "Student art shows?"

Me: "Yes, young padwan... it is often at undergraduate art student shows, MFA shows and other art schools' art exhibitions where the undiscovered jewels may reside, often at a lower degree of Samolians..."

Tonight is the opening of the Washington Studio School's Annual Juried Student Show, a terrific event to which I've never been asked to jury, but which I would love to do so. I've been to several of these in the past, acquired work at some of them, and I can tell you that it is usually one of the best student shows in the DMV.

The opening of the Annual Juried Student Show  is tonight, Friday, September 11 from 6-8 pm. The show was juried by WSS Faculty Member Carolyn Reece-Tomlin, installed by Jo Weiss and Joanne Kaufman, and mentored by WSS's vastly talented and hard-working faculty.

The students selected by Reece-Tomlin are: Adele McGovern, Belen Eliot, Bill Thompson, Brenda Fox, Brigitte Zelenko, Courtney Applequist, Carol Blum, Catherine Antoine, Caroline Champetier de Ribes, Chris Marlow, Elisa Sarmiento, Elizabeth Naab, Erika Mosher, Gail Goodman, Gail Jensen, Jacqueline Sparks, Jay Ball, Jill Bateman, Joanne Lamm, John Graham, Karen Slovin, Karim Bouabdelli, Kathryn Kailian, Lara Fredrickson, Laurance Frierson, Leo Bottrill, Leslie Blackmon, Monette Melanson, Maria Uehara, Maria Schreiber, Michele Lurie, Mitsuko Tsuchiya, Pat Kraniotis, Peggy Greene, Phyllis Mayes, Phyllis Ruffer, Scott Cowcher, Scott Wiskoski, Siobhan Fisher, Tanya Yudelman-Bloch, Teresa Jarzynski, Tricia Garey, Yassir Islam.

As an aside, Caroline Champetier de Ribes wins the award for the best artist name!
